An emergency bed warmer for power outages
This is a DIY emergency bed warmer hot that is made with a soft bottle. It is for providing sustained all-night warmth under the doona when our power/energy supply is increasingly disrupted by our changing weather systems.
The hot soft bottle was inspired by totally voluntary adventuring in the winter wilds to backpack ski and camps in the snow. The rather spartan hot soft mega bottle that contains 2,000ml of boiling water was the result is described in another more detailed post.
However, our only planet is increasingly reacting to our profligate use of fossil fuels by making our weather more hostile to us humans. It IS causing major disruptions to our lifestyle and energy networks through bushfires, floods and unseasonal snow.
Having a small endless supply of heat through a tiny and efficient wood stove such as a rocket stove or blower stove seems like a prudent way of preparing for an uncertain future with disruptions to our services. Some of the abundant heat from the combustion of wood can be stored in hot water and released slowly overnight for supplementary warmth while sleeping.
Consequently, I have made a more refined emergency bed warmer with a sewn soft cuddly towelling cover for the soft bottle. With the double towelling layer, it provides at least 8 hours of strong warmth and should make you a hero and a non-adventurer very gruntled in a power supply emergency.
