Saw and secateurs in safety pouch made by folding, cutting and taping a thin kitchen cutting sheet

This DIY ultralight bow saw is made from leg of a broken aluminium beach chair and a blade from a small Aldi bow saw. Weighing only ~150 g it is a serious wood cutting tool for winter backpacking. It is very useful if using a small tent stove for winter warmth.

Making the saw

After cutting out a suitable section of a bent tube from a discarded beach chair, I slit open the tube on both ends and flatten them, to allow the saw blade to fit between the flattened ends. Then I drill bolt holes in the flats to match the holes in the blade, so that the blade is held taut by the aluminium frame.

This saw helps to quickly prepare excellent fuel sticks for an ultralight tent stove.
